Replacing individual led's on led strips.
« on: November 25, 2016,06:06:27 »
I was just wondering if anyone's had a go at replacing individual led's on led strips,I've noticed that one or two places are selling them now, very cheaply. I've got a 50" LG in at the moment & the kit of 12 strips runs in at around £85 or so,which does make it an expensive job,but at least you know, you won't have to strip the screen again, because one of the other led's have failed a few weeks/day's later.
I'm just curious though about changing single ones, best method of doing so.I had little play this morning with a second hand strip(LG)now these are painted white!so firstly I tried hot air high temp, heated from back. The led comes off o.k. but the board does dis colour badly,I found you had to reduce heat to around 200 deg,to prevent paint changing colour, but then how do you reheat to solder in place led?I've looked at you tube, methods vary from hot air to breaking old led off board, then cleaning off dead bits with wick & hand soldering back on.Shop Jimmy use a hot plate system designed for back lights.
I'm just interested in what methods anyone else is using at the moment.I may well stick to just replacing the failed strips, but it would be nice to know how reliable individual replacement is.
Thanks guy's,John.

Hi Jordan, yes just watched it. Thats an easier led to replace, because the solder legs are tabs which are visable to solder.LG & Samsung leds, solder connections are under the led!so not visable to solder with standard iron.I've just watched the follow on film from that one, this time American guy & Samsung screen. He cuts out old led, makes good solder, then fits brand new led to board with clear sticky tape!!also the little lens held down by tape. How long is that going to last?

I take off the lens, break off the LED, then scrape the contacts and solder another LED on top that Ive cut off a faulty strip. I find out where the contacts are by scraping a working one and testing it with meter on diode mode. I know Im bridging with a 2nd hand diode and another might go next week, but thats a chance I take

Hi, Just a thought,

I tend to heat the strip under the dead LED with hot air and tweezer it off as soon as it moves. To replace use a little LMP solder on the pads, place new LED on top and heat strip from below with an antique Henley 60 watt iron 'till I see the LED settle into place - Seems to work but suspect as the other LEDs have probably been over-run a bit and show it - New strips might be better if giving a guarantee longer than the end of the road - Chris.
