Sharp LC37X20E - No Digital reception.

Hi folks,

Have one where it scans but finds nothing. First replaced the lower board with the tuner - Same. Then replaced the upper board with the HDMI sockets - Same again.

Confused (But have the service manual) - Chris.

Supply OK and ripple free? Only  common denominator here?

Hi Dave,

Have the service manual and have had lots of fun trying update via USB - It won't update. Pressing/holding channel down and input while turning on get only a flashing Green led which will flash for ever.
Trying get into service mode gets no 'K' so suspect it's a panel fault as set works well using Scart input, though with HDMI inputs OSG states input wrong format on two of the three sockets and the other the picture jumps about a bit.
Suspect I have a duff top (HDMI sockets) panel via Ebay so trying for another, though they're hen's teeth at a decent price - The lower board with the tuner is real cheap, possibly for good reasons - Chris.

Did you see page 8 of the user manual about supplying power to the antenna?

Supplying power to the antenna
You must supply power to the antenna in order to receive digitally/terrestrially broadcast stations after connecting the antenna cable to the antenna input terminal on the back of your TV.

1. Press MENU and the menu screen displays.
2. Press c/d to select “Setup”.
3. Press a/b to select “Antenna Setup-DIGITAL”, and then press OK.
4. Press a/b to select “Supply Voltage”, and then press OK.
5. Press c/d to select “On”, and then press OK.

Never had to do all that before!

Reminds me when I went to Sharp on their video recorders course when they first came out..... they had very naughty words on the PCB part numbers - if I tell ya' here I'll sure to get banned.

Hi Dave, Nice one,

Recall going to a Philips G500 course way back, Instructing chap liked a glass so we had a great time of an evening in Mitcham.

Have ever suspected that Philips stuff gets you that way.

Off the point, of course. My Antenna doesn't need a DC supply as it comes through a masthead amp, a distribution amp in the house loft and another distribution amp in the workshop.

Not a lover of amplifiers, but my house is the other side of a thick wood from 'Tacolneston' the local transmitter. Reception is sometimes a bit corrupt, but I know how corrupt it's liable to be and suggest folks do a re-scan to pick up any missing channels - Chris.

It confused me too, just that I thought it needed  the 'set up' doing to 'fire' the digi tuner. Thought I'd post rather than 'sit on it'  in case it helped.

Where we are we can virtually see Winter Hill.... no digital aerials here all pre-digital. Funny thing before digital, I could be repairing as portable and get better reception from HTV than I could from Winter Hill on it's loop aerial.

Not at all sure about 'Winter Hill' but will take a look, see where it is. Tacolneston from my place is about 30 miles West crow-wise, but reception so bad through the wood I pick up 'Sandy Heath' from West of Cambridge, and most everything else with a stronger signal.

Fortunately modern sets here go for the ' East Anglia' option, even though the reception is sometimes crap, signal wise - Chris.

Winter Hill , the location is Rivington moor Chorley in Lancashire. On a good day you can see Blackpool Tower

Been inside the TX room there, the TX tower halfway up is a balcony..... it has two lifts at the time of the visit non was working, not that we could go up - radiation hazard or you could shin up on ladders, planks every 20ft to stop you looking down. Even in a very slight breeze you could see the thing swing if you were on the balcony so I was told.

All the heat out the TX is used for heating the buildings.

Hi Dave,

Sounds impressive - Yesterday while having an early morning bath Radio 4 turned into an intermittent squark and TV from Tacolneston vanished for an hour or two.

Fortunately I don't run the shop, just try mend stuff when folks bring 'em in so wasn't bothered.

Reminds me of 'Continental Interference' where us lads (as were) were sent out with forty calls just in the afternoon and no chance of overtime. Our Ford vans hardly touched the ground, especially on corners. We even got used to the clutch cables breaking, and could do the biz without as the synchromesh was so good - Chris.
