Hitachi VM-E563LE 8mm Camcorder

Hello,
I have a Hitachi VM-E563LE 8mm Camcorder with take up problems.
Tape path is good up to the pinch roller/capstan motor, then the tape intermittently
goes slack with poor take up. The take up spool and idler/clutch have been replaced.
The back tension has been checked and there seems to be sufficient torque from the take up spool, running it without a tape. Has anyone any ideas.
