Hitachi 42PD6600 turns on but no picture or sound

I have a Hitachi 42PD6600 which turns on but I have no Picture or sound. I can't get into menu but
can see the PC mode/channel on the TV.
I'm thinking about a bit of DIY repairing due to being stung a year ago for the same fault.
Can anyone advice.
I have downloaded the service manual for ease of helping me to understand a little better.
If I don't try I'll never know if I could have save myself a couple of pound.  :diablo:
