Reading Codes from K-LINE

can anyone shed more information on reading codes from k line and what equipment or tools are required.
All info will be very much appriciated

fix2003:
i have built this and decodered 2 cdr500 units have writen some notes and added them to new zip
unit must be run on windows 98 machine restarted in dos mode not from does box or boot disc
read build and enjoy
