Hi Guys im new to the forum and looking for some help

got a mate that has and lcd tv that hes given to me but there is a black line down the left and hand side of the screen which makes it look like a 37" lol and also there is a smudge in the middle of the screen.

just looking for some advice on how  to repair or where to start
