1.Using a Philips RC,highlight "DVD/R",then Power-ON appliance from mains whilst holding down the OK button on RC.
2.A software upgrade screen should apper and software will be written directly from main processor onto the flash memory.
3.After software is rewritten restart appliance from mains

Hi Jordan, thanks for reply.... sorry it don't work, my bad I think.

The model is 42PF9631D/10... I gave the wrong info from the sticker it seems, certainly a BJ3. 0E chassis, software data on screen reads BXIE-0.81.40, 3rd Spin, dated 18/01/2007.

Flipips... er izzit Philips?

Well, having the correct model sure does help, I downloaded the firmware onto a usb drive pen installed and.... no luck!

The firmware 'appeared' to be updated and all the channels listed ..... but before our very eyes, the usual ones disappeared, funny thing is *sometimes* doing a retune will bring them back but another bunch disappears, always the same bunch when this happens, so something corrupting the data, it's always the same bunch playing their disappearing tricks!

If it was 'nasties' on the supply lines you'd think it would apply to any channels rather than the same bunch all the time.

BTW: The disappeared channels are listed as 'Not installed' and skips to the next one when selecting, other than this trick the set appears to function fine.

According to Messers Philips this set will not store the new channels!

Here's a snipped copy of their response.

Thank you for contacting us with regards to your query. We would like to provide you with the following information.

42PF9631D/10 is a digital TV. It was made in 2006 and ready for digital (2k) signal. After your TV was manufactured Freeview and Government decided to upgrade digital signal to 8k which requires MPEG4. Unfortunately your TV is no longer compatible with new signal.  This is why your TV does not save channels. Unfortunately this issue affects all TV's manufacturers who made TV sets at the time (2007 and older sets).
Below you will find an instruction to reset your TV. This would be only temporary fix to improve your TV's functionality. However to fix your TV permanently I would suggest consider buying Freeview set top box as software update would not help in this case. Freeview Boxes can be bought from any super market, and go for as little as £15-20.

1. Turn the TV on and set to the digital TV source.
2. On the television set itself, find the menu button on its lower left hand side or possibly on the top of the unit .
3. Press and hold this menu button down. It is vital that this is done on the television set and not on the remote.
4. Please hold this button down for at least 20 seconds. A menu should appear, and then disappear, and then a Philips Message should appear. Please hold the button down until this Philips Message appears.
5. This message will change language, wait until it's in English and press OK. A menu will appear.
6. Once on this menu, please scroll down to service scan with the remote and press OK.
7. The TV will now retune your channels one last time.
8. Press OK on both the messages that come up.
9. Leave the TV on for at least half an hour before turning it off.

You may receive a short survey about our interaction and the advice I have given to you today. Your feedback and comments would be tremendously helpful, as it will enable me to improve my service. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

With kind regards,
