Vertical line is poor bonded connection on data driver "chip on film" there is a lot of connections per gate and data driver. Get a 50X eye-piece and have a look. I would say their is at least 300 connections per IC.
Most screens have 8 data IC at the top, and 4 Gate driver left or right side.
The heat rising from CCFL tubes upsets the bonding and can give odd effects due to incorrcet RX Data, RX Clock and supply voltage. Usually after only 2 years of use, panel on time 4000 to 8000 hours I have found.
And I do see a hell of a lot of tv's.

Nice one UGM,
How do we mend 'em - Blue tack ? - Chris

Hi Chris,
Here is a list of screen faults that I have not been able to fix for long term reliability.
1 The thin line fault above. You can apply a bit of preasure to the IC but after a few weeks the IC will die, result is a few centimetres wide black line, screen U/S
2 The black line you get on certain 40" AU Optronics screens is poor vcc connection, ie power to the data driver. If you put too much preasure on the IC it will catch fire for a few secounds and burn the film connection to the Matrix and your (finger - ouch, a bit like catching your arm on the anode of a PL509.
Screen faults I have fixed in the last few years are...
001 Left side screen slow motion.
002 Left side screen dark.
003 All screen dark a bit like very low luminance and slow motion.
004 White screen
005 White and blue washed out screen using LG panel used in 42LG3000, right up to 2010 LH/LF range.
006 White and blue washed out screen using AUO panel used in 42LG3000, right up to 2010 LH/LF range.
007 Grey screen all LG models from 2007 to 2010. Mainly 42" AUO
008 Chi-Mei 26" panels grey for first 10 minutes to 2 hours.
009 White screen AUO 315XW02 range.
010 Chunghwa Dead on right side.
And many more.
When I get the chance I'll write down a "how to bodge these defect panels".
Regards,
UGM.

"for a few Seconds", doh.
Forgot to say image retension Samsung and AUO panels.

Hi UGM,
Where does the "for a few seconds" bit go - ie, only took a few seconds/only lasted a few seconds.
Really great to have your experiences - saves wasted time with rubber underfelt and blue-tack - wouldn't matter but it takes so much time for near 100% failure rate.
Thanks again - guess folks will be grateful for up-dates - Chris.
