Hi, I'm going to bite the bullet & buy a hot air rework station. Anyone got any advice on which is a decent one with readily available nozzles & spares, Cheers, Doug.

Hi Doug
we have had a Hakko unit, which has worked great for over 20 years but they are pricey, I have noticed CPC do one for about £50 and it looks exactly the same, might be worth a punt.

Hi Daz, Is that the Duratool one in CPC catalogue £61.76? Doug

Thanks Daz, I'll give it a go, Doug.

Paid around £90 for mine...a CSI 825A about 6 months ago ..and although its a useful tool ...I was a bit disappointed that it doesn't achieve temperatures which would allow re-balling on bga chips in laptops etc ..
What I really want is a TX999 IR station ..but out of my price range atm ...as it would _have_ to earn its keep ..
Unlikely in this economic climate..
The CSI 825A is capable of reflow however ..and certainly good enough for hot air replacement of surface mount chips with exposed pins.
But ..I still prefer to use chipquik and a standard fine tipped iron when doing the majority of jobs

Hi Evan, I use chip quik and it's very good but I just thought refitting would be easier with hot air station!! Doug.
-
Certainly will help with refitting Doug ..
The most critical thing being the quality of flux and solder paste ...
My main gripe is that the paste _is_ a bit pricey ...and doesn't keep well..
I keep mine in the fridge ..as its claimed this prolongs its useful life...
Once opened it does appear to have a 'shelf life'

Thanks for that Evan. Incidentally my 5 year old grandson loves your chipmonk!

...and all this time I thought it was a kitten doing press-ups ..
Tell your Grandson its awfully tired ...as even when I'm not around ...he carries on excercising...
A bit like me ..he never stops..
A miracle I haven't been reported to the rspca..
:wink1:
