I am told that this is the 'Chinese' version sold in tens of thousands by Tesco around Christmas 2006. I have attached some pictures of the innards to see if this can be confirmed by someone and also perhaps to get some idea of the origin and maybe some schematics for this particular version.
Tony Walker (TV_Tony) has said that eeprom failure is often the cause of 'stuck in standby' with this particular model.
Many thanks to Tony and his subsequent offer of help with this problem.

Tony Walker was absolutely right in identifying a faulty eeprom as the probable cause of 'stuck in standby' with this clone
Fortunately my particular model had a plug-in version of the IC.
My grateful thanks to him for his extremely knowlegeable help in clearing the problem.
