This set comes on for a few seconds then the screen flickers and goes off with a red flashing led,I suspect it may be a lamp error problem,is there any way I can overide the lamp protection so as to keep the set on long eneough to reset the eeprom?

"Industry Initialisation" is what you need and it's in the service menu. Switch the tv off at the wall outlet.
On the TV itself, press and hold AV (or VIDEO) and VOL DOWN, and switch the mains back on. Release the buttons when a small magenta letter K appears in the top left of the screen. Then press PROG DOWN and VOL DOWN together to enter the service menu. Look for and execute Industry Initialisation....there are many pages in the menu. Entering the menu will over-ride the backlight protection. Can't see this procedure rectifying the problem. More likely bad earthing of the inverter via it's mounting screws or duff ccfl lamp.

Thanks for your reply, after stripping it down it turns out 2 of the lamps dont come on.

Sounds familiar. Replacement is no guarantee of success however.
If you look at the other current Sharp Aquos thread which I started, you will understand my comment.

Maybe so, OldLes, but why shouldn't old tvman have a punt on it. Ideally one should replace all the lamps
in one go, but this would cost you a motza. I've successfully replaced one or two lamps in a Sharp, but you do notice the different intensity level between the old and new lamps. Your call, old fella.
