Title: Back To Basics
Post by: epi on February 24, 2011,16:30:43
Hi Folks,
Television Servicing, G.N.Patchett 1958 (2nd Ed. 1964).  Those four great books that some of us oldies studied to become TV. Techs, if anybody is interested, I'll pdf them and put them here in quuq.
Only need help on one thing, whats the best way (format) to scan and PDF for minimun space (load). I've managed to get these two chapters to 2.4Mb, rest of book will total 6 to 7Mb, (4 books aprox 28Mb), but I'm sure I can improve it, only how?? :dubbio:

Update: Full Volume 1 added in post "3" (8Mbs)
Full Volume 2 added in post "4" (9,8Mbs)
Full Volume 3 added in post "5" (3,8Mbs) Hope I haven't compressed this one too much.
Happy reading  :wink1:

Frank

Hi Frank,

Well great, I was there, ending up with quite pointless qualifications. In the 60's you had to do the biz - as TV rental companies were then to the fore and cared only about speed and cash.

Folks who actually thought (usually ex WW2 radar chaps with a Woolworth's screwdriver and a Demob suit)couldn't move fast enough - now rather embarassed as a youngster with a 'ratchet screwdriver' driving a cool 50's  Messershmitt three wheeler - guess those WW2 chaps made it - eventually, hopefully  - above.

Makes me recall 'Slaughterhouse 5' - Some Guy with silver shoes - awaiting iminent alien elevation - Chris

PS -realise it's not total telly mending stuff, but can upload SH5 if anyone hasn't lived since WW2.

Hi Chris
Here is the full book Volume 1 of Patchetts Television Servicing
TV rental companies were then to the fore and cared only about speed and cash.
I worked at Radio Rentals to......... Did the same work as the oldies but got half pay due to age.

Didn't read "Slaughterhouse 5" or see the film, one question, How did the Tralfamadorians move around?

All the best

Frank

Hi Frank,

Had a Mechanical engineering chum who used to pass me 'The Bulletin' and 'Radiophile'  For some reason, in retirement he loved old radios and tellies, whereas having to mend 'em to eat, I came to think them total crap - Catalin, MW 6/2's+Certain death and Wormwood - puke - Only 'Pure' radios are now worse.

Now, as to Tralfamadorians, apart from the usual saucer, don't think our Billy Pigrim actually metioned it - well, he had other issues after the Bulge Biz - Silver shoes, Likely death, Certain death then a bumpy mate of the Silver Screen -  bit of a no-no in Hitler's Germany but would make a good L/Democrat, perhaps  - Chris

PS - As a thought, perhaps another section on Quuq for folks who shopped at Proops, still recognise an RK34 and 807 from a CV6, and feel that Hivac valves were the acorn that made reasonable ersatz coffee.
