The dash is part of the immobiliser circuit.

In the key is a transponder.  That sends a message to the dash.  The dash decodes the message and sends a new message to the ECU (Electronic control unit) and the car then starts.  If the ECU does not recieve this signal then the car will start, run for 3 seconds then stop.

It is possible to reprogram the eeprom in the ECU to make the car run without an immobiliser, or you must replace the old dash and the car will run OK, or fit a new ( or used) dash and code it using Vag-Com.  If you fit a new (or used) dash you will need to get the pin number either out of the old dash (for system 2 and 3) or out of the ECU (for system 3 only).

Hope that helps.

If you post me more details, dash number, ECU number, fuel type (petrol / diesel) I can help you some more.
