Hi Leo,
While ago, when the brushes were worn out, the machine just didn't go.
Never needed an error message, as was pretty obvious.
Recall buying a new Hotpoint where the bearings failed after a year - Thought try sort some on the Flea to discover the drum assy was sealed, and bearings couldn't be replaced without a new drum assy.
Think remember 5 year guarantee suggested free replacement of the drum assy with an £160.00 charge for labour.
Didn't buy another Hotpoint - Admit little to do with Hoover, but suspect all machines are now made in Italy, and much the same - Chris.
Much later - Thought to mention bought a nearly new but second hand basic Beko. Great machine but gets into a paddy if wash load isn't balanced (See 'YouTube', where a chap puts it through it's test cycle paces with selective button pressing) - Bearings still the biz after a couple of years, with no drum shake at all.
Guess improved seals, but suspect still can't take it apart to change 'em, but haven't yet needed to.
