Why bother asking!
« on: May 04, 2017,07:37:39 »
So a punter rolls up late yesterday afternoon with a late cheapish Panasonic LCD TV.The pictures odd, looks like a spiders web!I'll put it on,but I bet your screens broken.NO,NO,No way it can be broken,no ones touched it.
Sure enough just off center, impact mark, like a Biro point, with lines radiating away from it.
Yep,as I thought, impact damage, caused by something hitting the screen,NO,No way that's happened, working fine Saturday night until around 11.30,broken at 1.30 pm Sunday when I switched it on!
Well all I can tell you is with 43 yrs of TV repairing, someone has broken your TV,do you have any young children at all that's the most common cause of LCD screen breakage,NO,NO, both my boy's are 19 &22,they were out Saturday night,it was one of them switched it on Sunday & told me it was faulty.
Well unless you've got a Ghost, may be hoovering Sunday morning someone has court the screen with Hoover handle & not noticed, then my best guess would be someone stumbled into it early hours Sunday morning!
Hmmmm,but,but they'd tell me,wouldn't they?
Oh well,suppose I've got to buy a new one,what should I buy?other than a Panasonic,cos I'm not having another one of their's after this little fiasco :03: :03:
What can you say,but laugh, why ask the expert in the first place.I would have loved to had been a fly on the wall in that house Saturday night,Sunday morning to see what had happened, lots of beer & shots me thinks.

Hi Bonesy,

Had a Sony KDL40R553C  in the other day, Son had given it to his dad saying it just wanted a RCU, stand and P/S.

Had some doubts but the screen looked OK so got the PS for a tenner from Ebay, as couldn't check it otherwise. Screen duff of course - Families - Chris.

Tbh,I work from a shop owned by my best mate,so I get free work space,he gets shop boy.I use to do a lot of field service, tune ins,but they've tailed right off now.Customers bring their stuff to us,I will go out & pick up,but tell them there will be C&D charge for this.Only ever had two in with broken screens, luckily spotted them as they came through the door, not broken in transit, but broken by kids that hadn't owned up at the time.

Best one used to be with the videos when you took the top of and the kids little toy was inside . You could almost hear the screams as the little kid got battered for costing his parents £40 as you walked away from the front door

just be careful with the samsung 43 inches they have internal shorts which cracks the screen, which make you think the screen has had an impacted damage, cheers

I also remember the older VCR's like Fergie 3v29 & Hitachi 8000,when rewind/fast forward packed up,first thing the man of the house would do,drop the top loading cassette door off & spray, that well known penetrating oil all over everything including heads & drum.Once had a 3v29,fault tape not loading, couldn't even get cassette housing to close, cause fish & chips rammed in by child, lovely, lol.
One day I'll write that book about all the loons I've dealt with over 40 years, some very funny, some should have been locked up.

Hi Bonesy,

Just had a Sony RDR-VX410 in where cust had sprayed your fave fluid because the loading belt was slipping - He took the top off and sprayed evenly from above.

Spent a while attempting a clean up - No dice.

Think that fluid should only be available on prescription where folks have to wear a badge so we can see 'em coming - Chris.

I had one guy pulling one out the car..... I told him push it back, likewise this looked like a spiders web originating from a 'biro' impact.

I repaired a telly once, the guy put it in his car, guess what?  His wife got out the front passenger seat, shoved the seat back and then..... CRACK, the LCD screen looked like a spiders web from one of the corners, the impact here was just a small fragment of corner of the screen shattered, as well as a busted trim..... my she was a big lady, a discus thrower if you ask me.

And dig this one in the day's of CRT's..... Tommy just loaded a 22" Bush in his work van on the main road, after chatting away to a passer by he got in the van leaving the van door ajar..... "HOY, Tommy" I shouted 'ZOOM' off he went at speed, maybe about 10 yards or so the telly comes flying out crashes onto the road in many pieces - thank God it was a rental and we had loan sets!

Just got a 55in LG from the dump. No pic so gingerly removed screen. For some reason couldnt get the strips to light with my pwr supply so scraped and checked every one. There was no duff one so I gingerly lifted and replaced the screen without a hitch. I replaced the metal surround and as I tightened the final screw, heard a 'ching' and the screen cracked though strangely enough no spider web effect as the crack didnt reach either edge. So back to the dump with it later. Must have been a PSU fault I suppose.

Remember doing one a while ago - Was a CCFL 32 inch jobby where the top tabs were suspect. Padded it out with flexible carpet underfelt stuff from the local tip - Terrific, job done.

On replacing the surround - No problems at all, but next day noticed a crack from a corner that had developed overnight as I hadn't quite got the screen in right.

Learned a bit from that one - Chris.

I watched a customer load up a 37" LG some time back into boot of car,now luckily he'd seen it working on bench.Loaded in laying on back on top of shopping, including tins of dog food all laying loose in back.I advised putting set on back seat, but no,picking kids up so no go.Following day brings setback ,no picture, yep broken screen caused by tins of dog food, thought I'd give him a refund, lol ,lol, silly man.
What I call a Disney thought process, kept telling me it's under warranty.Very hard at times not to be rude, you have to find different scenarios, like your cars gets serviced as agreed, costs £150 for service, then you complain that second gear is noisy, garage man is not going to fit a free gear box for you.

Happens all the time, fixed a set where the customer laid it screen down on the mains plug. Didn't actually break the screen but the scratches were a bit off putting. Didn't offer a refund, just smiled after he'd gone again as I didn't load it into his motor - Chris.
