Sony KDFE50A12U
« on: May 18, 2009,15:54:56 »
Just got one today at a bargain price. However its not perfect, nothing ever is.

The optical block is dusty, so will pull that out when I get some compressed air, I have a proper compressor but I can't truthfully say it'll be dry and oil free as it runs air tools.

The HDMI port doesn't work on any setting 480/720/1080i. The component input displays all settings fine.

And finally a brightness issue.

Someone has also been in and about it as well, lots of screws missing I pulled the back off and saw the bulb housing wasn't fitted correctly and blah blah.

I also looked at the very small HDMI board and saw nothing out of the ordinary, no bad solder joins etc never measured anything as I have no values to compare it with. I was wondering if there was any known issue with them, I done a google search and it picked up a few people with the same issue but no one had a fix. So anyone any ideas?

The brightness issue, apparently the bulb has been change dbut the picture is still dark. I looked at the bulb and tbh it looks quite old, the service menu shows 226 hours. I am not sure if it has or hasn't been changed. However something which struck me as odd, there seems to be quite a lot of light leakage, with the cover off and on you can easily see very bright light leaking out, the bulb housing is fully shoved home as the microswitch is happily closed. I have no experience with either lcd rear projection or DLP's so not sure if some light leakage is normal. I would have thought the only place light shoudl be leaking is from the screen  :biggrin2:

If it is then I assume a new bulb is the way to go? And yes the brightnes is at the max setting.

The 60Hz spinal tap fix has also been done

Hello,

It would be worth cleaning the mirror before trying the lamp (replacements cost about £160),
especially if it's from a dusty environment.

The HDMI fault could be  diodes D9500 and D9501 on the P board, short circuit.
(located near the sockets).

Regards.

Well pulled it apart, found an air filter at the entry to the centrifugal fan, it is totally blocked, so its been left out until i can get a replacement.

Cleaned up the mirrors etc, however someone else has been in before and left finger prints etc and theres screws missing.

Anyway took ti all out cleane dit up put it back in forgot to put the purple cable back onto the a/v socket board, turned the set on, the screen came up nice and bright then flashed green then red then blue then went to a black screen. However a bright black screen, liek a normal telly when theres no input.

Plug the purple wire back in bright black screen again but no channel info or menu up etc.

Took it apartty a bit more and redone the connections.

Back on and the channels etc show up but the screen is dull again however its not as dull as it was. Now the brightness down to halfway you can still see the picture which you couldn't before.

So the bulb is ok as the bright picture that was up is what I imagien it to be liek when perfect. So where do I look next, its obviously for some reason not outputting full brightness through when everything is connected up. But does when something isn't plugged in/plugged in right. Theres a fault clearly but where?

Watteau you were dead right with the leaky diodes. Don't suppose you knwo the values of said diodes?
