Hi folks, and thanks again Sparky,
Did as you suggested - didn't help me either, so thought that a better HD wipe might be the answer. Loaded in Windows '98, then finished off with XP - two wipes are perhaps better.
Upshot was that initial 2 x XP problem resolved, but machine was still incredibly slow, wonder why.
Moving on - Slow Packard Bell Imedia 1501. Should have checked the PB website first, it's great. And as 'Driver Detectives' drivers caused machine to crash, consulted PB who informed that the HD had a recovery info section that could be used to write a re-installation disc.
Merde - Again - never learn. Initially found the 2 x XP situation, and cleared it with a double wipe, re-loaded with PB drivers, and it's now as fast as me on pension day.
Trouble is now that it's wanted for kids games, and a Graphics card is the business - have tried three, and after the initial 'Hello and welcome bit' screen blanks out.
Carefully checked the PB site again and discovered it's a known problem requiring a BIOS update. This done, all works well - Phew.
