SAFETY WARNING GUYS !! VESTEL PSU'S
« on: July 14, 2011,13:23:43 »
Don't know if this has been mentioned before in the forums but Vestels using a slightly cheaper and much nastier version of their PSU in some non branded sets the one I've got here is 17PW22-4 now I'm not sure if this is a common fault on them as I've had a few now do the same or if it's a design flaw.
The smoother block caps 2 of them on the left hand side of the primary both 68Uf at 400v don't seem to have a discharge resistor fitted and hold their charge for days and as I found can give you a bloody sore skelp !
I suppose we've all got a wee bit blase' on the vestel PSU's just expecting them to discharge but on these you really need to manually discharge it to save you a nasty reminder !

Hi,

True too of some Vestel 17IPS boards, still with tube tellies with no/or crap discharge resistors, after hefty  sets that irradiated our underpants early 60s, wonder we survived.

Hi Dave - note you still live that telly basher life - well impressed - Chris

Isn't it one of the basics of electronic repair to ensure you have discharged those lovely big caps before you poke then with screwdrivers or moist fingers.....  :s_laugh:

Very much so I couldn't agree more however as nearly all the previous vestel PSU's uniformly and reliably discharged themselves without a problem it is possible to get a wee bit careless based on your previous knowledge, the point of this topic is merely a " heads up " to remind us all " caps need care " I certainly don't presume to tell anyone knowledgeable in the field how to do their job...

thanks dave, no one wants to sound like they're preaching to the converted just thought it'd be handy to make folks aware these mutant vestel psu's are different and need to be handled with care...I know for me anyway every day's a school day have never even after all these years, got to the point where I can say I know it all and can't appreciate any help or tips given !

Once upon a time when the company I worked for began the transition into repairing plasma's and lcds I was asked to put together a wee familiarization course to make the team aware of basic operations known weak points etc
It astounded me to find when it came to working on sets how many shortcuts on safety these guys were taking based on their field experience thats why I'm all too aware how easily even veteran engineers can get caught out when something unexpected happens lets face it most of us are always fighting the clock and don't always do as we should !

oops, didn't mean anything malicious - was meant to be a light hearted post

I know work and other pressures get in the way at times and in the past I've had a few singe marks on my fingers exactly the same leg pitch of those lovely 400v caps

-No prob what you said was right on the money we should always check but when you get 100 with no residual charge its easy to say sod it and assume the next one's going to be the same takes 2 mins to post things like this and if it saves one poor sod gettin a nice red capacitor tatoo well power to it !
