Had a look at one of these today for a friend.. There was one black 2 inch vertical bar running down the screen.. My mate said that the fault was intermittent, so I naturally thought one of the ribbons weren't connected properly or had contaminants on it.. Cleaned them all with alco and reconnected them.. Bar was gone... After a while (30 - 40 mins or so) the bar came back.. Is it looking like buffer boards are needed? Any info would be greatly appreciated.. steep learning curve these tv's! Lol

hi, can you see any smd resistors on the bottom buffer boards, if so these might be dry jointed

Cheers for the reply Shaun.. was just reading up on the fault and found out it could possibly be a dead driver..What's are the odds? You say bottom buffer boards, all I could see where the two to the left of the y-sus.. do you mean on these boards?

hi again,just thinking out loud i've seen plasma tv with these board some go the length of the tv must be older ones, have you got service a manual if not,i've just sent you one, if you get a chance can you take a picture of the tv thanks.

Sorry for poor quality as it was sent to me via txt.. My mate said the bar will change from solid black to slightly fuzzy and sometimes there will be image on it but the line is still obvious..

you could try replacing the buffer board, but i think the screen is faulty i hope i'm wrong good luck

You need to be looking at the boards [3] that run along the bottom of the panel, in particular the one that is located directly behind the bar on the screen. These boards  sometimes have their flexicables bonded to the panel. May be bad news if they are. Other times mfrs use COFs [component on film] for the flexis. You should be able to access these components on the underside of the COF and carefully reflow them. Go for the one nearest the bar on the screen. You may have to remove a covering heatsink to find them, not forgetting, as t1412 pointed out, it may be the panel itself.

sorry to be a pain but can you take a picture of the back of the tv, the top and botton buffers i can point out what needs reflowing, then if this don't work we could try the ribbon repair trick if this don't work then chuck the tv through the window only joking, thanks

Cheers lads.. The tv is about 30 miles from where I live and it's so big and heavy my mate can't get it to me.. What are the chances of it being each of the faults listed.. Personally I think it could be the ribbon, but I cant be 100%. What does the ribbon repair entail as I've never repaired one before and how long would the repair last?  Need to know if it would be worth my while going back or should I  tell my mate to leave it in somewhere local.. Being 30 miles away, I don't fancy having to make a few trips back and forward. I originally thought I could save him a few quid, not so sure now..

to be honest i'd leave to someone local, the ribbon repair is where you bond a bit  of rubber on the ribbon stop it flexing when the tv gets warm sometimes it works sometimes it don't, have look on youtube... cheers

My money's on the panel. It was only the LG version 5 panel that suffered from poor connection of the smd
resistors on the COF.

Thanks again guys for your input but I have decided not to go ahead with this.. Well my mate sorta helped with the decision. It's gonna annoy me though, not knowing what the fault was, but I take comfort knowing that you guys reckon it's the panel..
