AOC model L26W781B
« on: November 30, 2012,07:15:41 »
Just picked up this AOC. (Brings back memories of two 17" AOC monitors we had at work 15 years ago. Every
time we fixed it, it blew up one week later.)
However, after replacing bridge, the NP901 surge device, and fuse it seems to be OK.
However, it needs tuning in. Pressing menu gives me chance to adjust contrast etc., I think. Problem is the menu appears to be in Portuguese, not English. I need to get to the "First use installation" menu. Anybody any ideas? Instruction book? Service manual?

My pal located instructions, and I managed to get it speaking English. The tuning menu only appears on (analogue) TV, and of course it found no stations. Tried aerial in both analogue and DTV connectors, but no digital signals found. The manual refers to a DTV Menu, but no sign of it anywhere.
Connecting a digibox via scart give good pictures, but not full screen, with black box all around.
Any thoughts could be useful.

Well, between us we have decided that the "missing menu" is only going to appear if we get a genuine remote control, so that is on order from Wiltsgrove. Hopefully, it will fix things.

Long slow job, this one. I got the remote from Wiltsgrove, but it did not work. I sent it back and got one elsewhere with an absolute assurance that it was the correct one. Now I could try tuning it in, but since analogue had just finished, no success there. We got into the DTV menu and managed to find the first time installation. Unlike the analogue, it ran through the digital search very quickly, but found nothing. OK, concentrate on tuning the analogue side in. Two ancient CBGs failed to get a locked picture, and what signal did get through was probably IF bleed through. I previously had a Phillips 5519, but allowed it to go. I always kept that tuned precisely to band 1, band 111 and four UHF channels, not much use now. Eventually, we got hold of a working video, tuned to ch.33, and it locked it to that. It was beginning to look like the DTV tuner.
Since then, I have acquired a few more sets, mostly cracked panels, so time to try a replacement tuner. Problem is I did not have adequate info on which was the correct one to use. The one from a TCM looked identical, so I tried that. No longer possible to enter the DTV menu at all! Remove and refit original tuner, and thankfully it goes straight to the first time setup, but still with no stations detected. Try the DTV tuner from a scrapped Vistron. Success. Now screwed to the wall opposite the bed, without the need for a digibox. Total outlay £12 for the remote. OldLes.

Well, SWMBO has been watching this most nights for the last 11 months. Periodically, I get called to "fix it". Usually she has pressed a button and put it into analogue mode, so I select DTV and leave her to watch. A few times, the call has been because it has jumped into setup mode, so I set everything up again. On one occasion, it jumped into setup for me, so maybe  this is an intermittent fault?
Tonight, I got the call, and it was really screwed up. It seems it had gone into setup, so she had a go herself. Now as most of us know, not many women seem to be able to do something as difficult as setting up a menu, but since her first language is Russian, and her English is far from perfect, she was at a bigger disadvantage than usual. I suspect she had not changed the default language to English. I think it is normally in Belgian. Anyhow, it did its channel search thro analogue, then through DTV, and then finished up showing "BBC Red button" on an otherwise blank screen. I tried everything I could think of, including a new search from menu, switching off at mains, but could get little more than some rubbish in French (but was it Belgian?).
I left her to it, then after a few minutes, was called back. Now she had a small picture on upper RHS, with a list of channel numbers on LHS. Not 1, 2, 3 etc, but 1054, 1052, 1047 numbers (not those, but in 10** form) but with channel identity (eg, BBC2, Quest etc.). Using up and down arrows, it is possible to select desired channel, press OK, and view the small picture.
It seems to me that I need a full factory reset.
How do I do that???

Back to normality. This set has separate menus for both analogue and digital TV. The analogue menu is more extensive, and probably takes priority, but it was the digital that she had screwed up. Because the analogue was unchanged, much of the language was still English, but it was the DTV specific stuff that was in French which I failed at O level 57 years ago.
However, I managed eventually to find "premiere installateur" or something similar and it was then straightforward. The "1034" and "1051" numbers I mentioned seem to be the official station identifiers, the lowest number being for "BBC Red Button", hence its appearance. A completely different arrangement that that used in any UK tuned set I have ever seen before.
I just wish the damn thing would stop jumping to installation. It seems as if it loses ALL its tuned data, and knows it needs it renewing.
