i must be lucky i've repaired a few of these by shorting the epprom out and retune,

Ive never shorted an eeprom yet. I always replace it. For goodness sake its only a few pence for one.

Resetting the eeprom does not remove the corrupt data, either replace the eeprom or erase all data from the original. After fitting a blank eeprom there will be several settings in the service mode that will need changing to get the set working correctly, this can be checked in the service manual.
