AOC gone silly. Model L26W781B
« on: September 30, 2015,18:34:02 »
Two years ago I nattered on about a 26" ex amenity site AOC.  (http://www.tv.quuq.org/forum/index.php?topic=6920.msg21314#msg21314  )
Two years with nary a moan from SWMBO (NO comment!!!) about her bedtime viewing.
Tonight however "Les, my TV goes off".
Operate remote, comes out of standby, and claims No Signal, then within just a few seconds reverts to standby. I tried going into menu, which was displayed OK, but after the same short period again goes to standby. The background looks evenly illuminated, with no obviously dodgy florrie tubes.
Not sure where to start, any suggestions anybody?
Les.

Hi Old Les,

What's the set by any other name ? Don't see many AOC hereabouts.

Gather SWMBO comes from 'She' by that H Rider Haggard chap - Explains much - Chris.

Turnip, not sure anything else is the same as AOC.
However, it is working OK again now.
Later last night I tried it again, same symptoms. From time to time I get a shout "TV not working", and I usually find it is snowy, with analogue selected not DTV. One press of the "TV" button toggles it from analogue to DTV. So, last night, I pressed TV, and got snow without instant shut off. Pressed TV again, normal service resumed.
I really don't know if the occasional "No TV" cry is because she has pressed TV accidentally or in error, but maybe it does it itself? Well, whatever, I think it must have found an illegal setting last night, hence the shutting down.
20 years ago, we sold two 17" AOC monitors. Not good! One was fairly OK for a while, but the other just kept failing and blowing stuff, burning up print or whatever. It was a complicated circuit with everything almost doubled up. (Remember some very early CTVs, such as the first Kortings? They had PL509 line output valve, plus a second PL509 for EHT output. I once had one hissing, small picture and 35KV shown on my Marconi 50KV EHT probe. I switched off quickly and advised scrapping, anyway, not for me as I was just learning). Well, those two AOCs reminded me of that sort of un-neccessary complexity. Even had a big relay for degauss, and did they shake when that operated?
However, as a freebie which only needed a DTV tuner from another scrapper, I really should not grumble about this particular AOC.
Les.

Hi Les,
I decided to go it alone when Visionhire bought a whole heap of Philips K70s and K80s. The G500 was just dandy, esp when we removed the system switches, but the early Philips hybrid K range were truly horrid, and in old age, the valve Luminance/CDA panels used to burn up and folks (not me) used to do all manner of bodges to make the pound.

Was glad to leave Philips behind, even though then had to sort Thorn 3000 series with all those dry caps in the   P/S and burned pots on the convergence board, and Pye hybrids where due to dubious design the LOPT caught fire.

Next Philips I met was the good old G8, then K30 and KT3 - Fine sets, but then they went downhill again, and their last tubed sets arrived in dozens, as they wouldn't fire up (apart from the on/off switch, which often did) Really glad to leave tube sets behind, even though made the pound from duff LOPTs - Chris.
