Faulty LED string

Has anyone managed to replace a faulty LED in a string. I cant see how to get it out and thats even practicing on a duff set. Or managed to source replacements. Mebbe we should have a sale/swap area just for the strings. Theres a guy on Ebay who'll replair a faulty string for £20 + post.

LEDs are usually mounted on a pcb strip. Use a hot air gun or butane torch to heat the underside of the strip below the faulty LED until the solder has melted sufficiently for you to just slide the LED off. Ditto for fitting on a new or harvested LED.

Just an update. I had 2 32" Celcus LEDs so I thought I'd try and make 1 from 2. I tested the LEDs and found of the 5, 2 were working, 1 was dead and the other 2 had 1 LED each out though lighting up. On checking the dead string, there was only 1 faulty LED in the centre. Strangely the 2 that had 1 LED faulty, the duff one was near the beginning. Anyway swapped the working one though my other set also had 2 strings working but with 1 LED out in each. The set now works and there is no visual indication that there are 2 duff LEDs. I turned the backlights down to low and I loaned it to a customer so I'll see how long it lasts.

Its a fiddly job and I wouldnt do it for a customer.

Definitely fiddly, but it gets easier with practice, and one has to make a quid somewhere.

Hi Sinclair,

Gather that Bruce does it upside-down and also uses a blowlamp to re-solder the Leds.

Aussies are real nifty, where we fiddle with temperature control and LMP solder.

Guess short of Barbie expertise, but Bruce is currently in high summer - Can't wait - Chris.
