No I havn't checked it yet,(I don't know how to but by neighbour is an electronics engineer so I will get him round hopefully later today to do the test) they reply

HI well ask him to check volt regulators on the main board as well if he wouldnt mind .

As you said it worked for a while then stopped working again, had the same problem on a set that if you unplugged it for a couple of hours it would work until you turned it off then it wouldnt come back on again until you left it unplugged for another couple of hours.
That was a regulator that caused it worth a check or as sparky said could well be a software issue

Hi,
I have resolved the problem, which wasn't really a problem at all
I started again from basics and found that I had sourced "TV" instead of "DTV" on the television
So I corrected that and re-tuned both the TV and the recorder and now have a perfect picture.
Could the fault that I had, have resulted in changes still taking place with the incoming RF signal at the time I lost the picture? as prior to that point I had no problems, and I changed over from analogue to digital last September or so I thought!!
Anyway, thanks for your input and I have learn't again that "back to basic's" is always the right option
