Remote Control Repair

Hi, some remotes are hard to locate, and a neighbour brought me his worn out OKI TV remote as a last resort. I've checked for threads and didn't find this topic, so here goes. The remote had nearly all the contacts worn. I purchased a hole puncher, aluminiun foil and glue, punched out around 40 3mm circles and glued them one by one, around 15 minutes. The remote worked perfectly. Good customer in the past, so I couldn't let him down, invited me to a few  and paid the parts I bought, 5€.

I usually give the contact pads a clean with IPA, then rub a hot soldering iron over each pad and a final clean with IPA. Usually works, but fiddly foil if all else fails though!

It's not India Pale Ale!
IPA is Isoprpyl Alcohol, probably the most common cleaning solvent used in the electronics industry.

Supposed to be highly flammable, but useless for starting a BBQ, white spirit is much better. Please don't use these liquids to start BBQ's it is dangerous and stupid, remember health and safety and risk assessment first! . I sometimes use them as I lived in Greece for several years and they do lots of dangerous and stupid things as they don't have health and safety!

Anyway, my eyebrows will grow back in time.

It's only Wednesday morning and India Pale Ale sounds like a good idea.

Hi Chris, wouldn't mind not retiring, but I'm getting paid for lazing around, and I'm begining to like it, ah thats life, still haven't snorkeld, waters a bit cold, suppose thats age.......

Well silver foil,you live and learn.I have never come across a remote that needed more than a couple of pads replacing,which i find cutting old pads out of another remote or out of the same remotes pad(as most have pads that are spare,ie they dont go through to a button on front so they are virgin)and just superglue in place of worn out ones.But usually just a wipe with a cloth with a bit of foam cleanser on,both to pads and circuit board 90% of time cures problems.Plus check for rust on battery terminals,chech for battery leakage on cicuit board and scrape off.If any sighns of leakage in and aroung chip then its usually a gonner.Oh anh check for drys on led sender at top of remote.I usually get 98% of them working following these simple ideas.

The remote I repaired had some liquid spillage as original problem, and most of the pads were damaged, but these pads do wear out in time and silver foil doesn't, so the remote should last longer than his TV, I hope.
