Pioneer PD-Z83M - Laser problem ?

Hi Folks,

Have one of these old timers in where the disc spins and the laser squeaks but doesn't read the discs. Have a feeling, as the screws were loose, cust has twiddled all the pots, as had another in a week ago, and a lens clean did the biz.

ChasHyde does a replacement laser assy at £144.30 plus the usuals.

Guess it's a bin job. Chap on line had reset all the pots, as folks had to in those days, but no success whatever.

Don't suspect I'll fire up the scope - Chris.

Hi Chris,

The lasers rarely fail in these old machines! Although due to age now, I guess they can.
You wouldn't be able to change the laser unless you have a special tool for the grating adjustment. These are not plug and play like the sony KSS types!

the usual problem with these was the spindle motor, and then adjustment of the focus and tracking presets.
 
I would give the spindle motor bearings a clean and lube, then go through the adjustment procedure. These were not easy to set up.

Would agree as have had several old Philips machines in where the tray loading cog has failed of old age, but the laser is as good as ever.

Nice to know that China still makes the cog - for a price.

As I noted - Guess the chap had had the lid off and twiddled the pots - Rather glad modern machines don't have pots, as the home enthusiast will always have a go if there are any.

Had a nice Vestel TV in the other day where the customer took the back off and couldn't find any pots, so brought it in for a Shottky diode change - Vestel LED of course.

Thanks again, but think will give it a miss, as not an easy earner, and folks usually want change from a fiver, esp. with old stuff - Chris.
